2009-01-31 Britten Saint Nicholas (All Saints' Church, Maidenhead)

In September 2008, the choir started work on the Benjamin Britten cantata Saint Nicolas, which we performed on Saturday 31st January 2009 at All Saints' Church, Boyn Hill, Maidenhead.

A unique, choral celebration of the Christmas cycle.

Leave aside, for the time being, images of jolly, red-coated, black-booted, white-bearded, sleigh-driving stereotypes. For the real story of the legendary "Santa Claus" as recounted by Benjamin Britten, Saint Nicolas, has it all. A magnificent cantata involving not just one but two choirs, a tenor and four treble soloists, and an orchestra with percussion and strings, a great organ, a piano duet and a brilliant libretto. Add the masterly touch of one of the nation's most dynamic conductors, whose infectious enthusisam for the work knows no bounds.

Saint Nicolas was Britten's first large-scale work, dating back to 1948, written with mainly amateur performers in mind. It tells the story of the life and the achievements of Nicolas, the 4th-century bishop of Myra, in Asia Minor. The miracle, for which Nicolas is best remembered, was how he restored to life three young boys who had been pickled in brine by a wicked butcher. This story led to the tradition of giving presents to deserving children. As the Feast of St. Nicolas falls on the 6th of December, we can imagine how the popular image of St. Nicolas gradually evolved into the much-loved figure of Santa Claus, as celebrated throughout Europe.

The Saint Nicolas cantata wonderfully captures the essence of this story with a series of dramatic movements to which the performers and the audience can easily relate.

2009-05-20 Haydn Missa in Angustiis (Nelson Mass) (Borlase Performing Arts Centre, Marlow)

We performed our Summer Concert of music by British Composers and Joseph Haydn's Nelson Mass in the Borlase Performing Arts Theatre on Wednesday 20th May 2009.

Haydn's Missa in Angustiis (a mass for troubled time) was his largest mass, one of his most well-known and beloved choral works. It's no wonder the work was linked with Lord Horatio Nelson given the friendship that developed between the prolific composer and the great admiral during a turbulent period of Europe's history.

2011-01-22 Mozart Requiem & Haydn Insanae et Vanae Curae (All Saints' Church, High Wycombe)

The Mozart Requiem and Joseph Haydn's Insanae et Vanae Curae concert was on 22nd January 2011 at a new venue for us: All Saints' Parish Church, High Wycombe.

About The Requiem - W A Mozart (1756-1791)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem in D Minor (K626) was his final and most prolific work os music. Unfortunately, Mozart died on 5th December, 1791, at the young age of 35, before he could finish the entire Mass. This has generated controversial debate ever since at to how uch of the work was originally composed by Mozart, and how much was later finished by his pupil, Franz Xaver Süssmayr who many music scholars felt had committed several serious flaws uncharacteristic of Mozart's style.

The version the Choir performed was the New Novello version, as edited by Duncan Druce, which takes Mozart's autographed manuscript completed by Süssmayr as the starting material and revised to correct copying errors so as to correspond exactly with the traditional Mozart/Süssmayr score.

About Insanae et Vanae Curae - Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
This motet, Haydn's last work, was written sometime between 1805 and his death in 1809 as his final judgement on the vanity of life. It is amongst his most dramatic and colourful writing.
Foolish and groundless cares invade our minds,
Often with madness they fill our hearts, which are bereft of hope,
What does it profit you, O mortal man to strive after earthly things, if you neglect those of heaven.
All things are favourable to you if God is with you.

2011-05-25 Purcell Dido & Aeneas (Borlase Performing Arts Centre, Marlow)

The Summer Concert, held on 25th May 2011, featured henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas in the Borlase Performing Arts Theatre, Marlow.

About Dido & Aeneas - Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
The earliest source material for Dido & Aeneas dates from 1689, although the opera may have been performed some years before. Henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas captures the tensions and decorum of the Baroque era. The opera is based on Virgil's tragic love story of a Queen and a Trojan refugee. Dido & Aeneas is a fine example of Purcell's mastery in word setting and word painting showing a refined sensitivity for drama in this choral version of the opera.

Conductor ~ Gillian Dibden MBE

Leader of the Orchestra ~ Marilyn Vanryne

Soloists:

  • Caroline Fitzgerald (Dido)
  • Gill Ross (Belinda)
  • Jeanette Ager (The Sorceress)
  • Mark Griffiths (Aeneas)

2012-01-28 Gounod St Cecilia Mass & Parry I Was Glad (All Saints' Church, High Wycombe)

Charles Gounod's St Cecilia Mass and Sir Hubert Parry's I Was Glad (the opening anthem) were performed at the Winter Concert in All Saints' Parish Church, High Wycombe, on 28th January 2012.

A right Royal Occasion at All Saints' Church, High Wycombe - 28th January 2012

You will undoubtedly recognise the Coronation Anthem by Sir Charles Hubert Parry I was glad, Glad when they said unto me as this was performed for the entrance of the Bride at the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Westminster Abbey in April. But, at All Saints' Church, High Wycombe on Saturday 28th January at 7:30pm, a fanfare launched a performance of Parry's celebrated anthem as you have never heard it, with a double choir of 100 singers in eight parts and a truly amazing orchestra, complete with brass (horns, trumpets, cornets, trombones), woodwind (clarinets, bassoons, oboes, flutes), a full string orchestra plus timpani, percussion and even a harp! All of this by the Marlow Community Choir at Borlase and Orchestra, led by Marilyn Vanryne, under the baton of Gillian Dibden MBE, their Music Director.

The same ensemble then went on to perform Charles Gounod's stunning St Cecilia Mass, reflecting his skills as a truly European composer of operatic works. Of special interest for all musicians, St Cecilia is acknowledged as the Patron Saint of musicians befitting the first performance of the Mass on St Cecilia's day, 22nd November 1855. Gounod later went on to become the very first conductor of the Royal Choral Society, which celebrates its 140th Anniversary this year and was established for the opening of the Royal Albert Hall in 1872.

There were other treats in store with music by Fauré, Verdi, Makholm, Kreisler and a rare opportunity to hear an organ work by Théodore Dubois, Toccata in G, played by Hugh Robson, resident organist at Sir William Borlase Grammar School.

Even more remarkable is that this concert was by a local Community Choir, reflecting the growing interest in community choirs nationally, and was the culmination of months of preparation by the choir and young musicians, not just Borlasians, but from around the area, plus members of staff, parents, relatives and friends.
